WickWorming® is a sustainable gardening company based in Australia that provides a range of products and services to help individuals and communities grow their own food in an environmentally friendly way.
WickWorming® offers a range of products including raised wicking planter boxes, composting worm farms, and garden covers.
Yes, all of our products are made in Australia using high-quality, locally sourced materials.
A WickWorming® planter box is a self-watering raised garden bed that uses a wicking system to draw water up to the plants as needed. The system includes a water reservoir at the bottom of the planter and wicking cells filled with perlite that helps transport the water to the plants' roots.
Our composting worm farms allow households to compost their food waste rather than putting it in bins, which ends up in landfill and contributes to environmental damage. The compost produced by the worms can be used to enrich soil and improve plant growth.
WickWorming® offers a separate composting worm farm product that can be added to your planter box. These two products are either the Subpod or Com-Pot. The worms will help break down organic matter and enrich the soil with nutrients. To add worms to your planter, simply purchase a bag of worms and release them into the soil or into the composting worm farm.
Some of the benefits of using a WickWorming® planter box include water savings (up to 80% compared to traditional watering methods), healthier plants due to consistent and optimal moisture levels, and ease of use (no need to constantly water or worry about plants drying out while on vacation). All of our products are designed to be environmentally friendly and help individuals and communities grow their own food sustainably. They also save water, reduce waste, and provide healthier plants with higher nutritional value.
To fill the water reservoir, simply pour water into the inlet pipe at the top of the planter. The water level can be monitored by using a “dipstick” in the inlet pipe or filling till it overflows out the overflow pipe. The reservoir should be topped up as needed, but typically only needs to be refilled every 3-4 weeks. This will depend on what plants you are growing, the time of year, and the amount of natural rainfall that you experience. However, in our experience, periods of up to 4 weeks are achievable before you will need to refill your WickWorming® planter box. It is recommended that you allow the water level in your WickWorming® planter box to go down to at least 1/4 full before refilling. This will assist soil aeration.
When full, there will be 120 litres per square metre of water in your WickWorming® planter box.
Yes, you can use any type of soil in a WickWorming® planter box. Unlike river sand/scoria/gravel based wicking beds, WickWorming® planter boxes do not require a sandy soil mix. The optimal mix is ultimately dependent on what is to be planted. However, as a general rule, the mix should contain up to 50% by volume of organic matter. Mushroom compost should be included to enhance the soil structure.
Most types of plants can be grown in a WickWorming® planter box, including vegetables, herbs, and flowers. However, it is important to consider the size and needs of the specific plant when choosing a planter size and location.
One way to check if your plants are getting enough water is to feel the soil near the base of the plant. If it feels dry, it is time to refill the water reservoir. You can also monitor the water level using the “dipstick” method.
WickWorming® planter boxes can be used in both outdoor and indoor environments. It is important to consider the specific needs of the plants and the location when choosing a planter location.
A WickWorming® planter box is made from high-quality materials and is designed to last for many years with proper care.
Our garden covers are designed to protect plants from extreme weather conditions, pests, and other hazards. They are made from durable, UV-resistant materials and can be easily removed and stored when not in use.
